Oman and Namibia played out a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 tie in their Group B match in Barbados on Monday, prompting a first Super Over in 12 years in the tournament.

Batting first on a sticky surface, Oman tottered to 109 in 19.4 overs after left-arm pacer Rubel Trumpelmann trapped opener Kashyap and skipper Aqib Ilyas off the first two deliveries of the match before dismissing wicketkeeper Naseem Khushi in his second over. Veteran David Wiese then dented the middle-order with three wickets before Trumpelmann returned to record his best bowling figures – 4/21 in four overs.

In reply, Namibia seemed to be in control of a slow chase before Oman tightened the noose at the end. While only five runs were required in the final over, medium pacer Mehran Khan pulled off two wickets before enforcing the tie. Khan cleaned up Jan Frylinck (46) and Zane Green and left Wiese with two runs to get off the final delivery. Though Wiese missed the ball, wicketkeeper Khushi failed to collect the ball cleanly, offering a vital bye for Namibia to level the scores.

Wiese wins the Super Over

Batting in the Super Over, Wiese and Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus plundered 21 runs off seamer Bilal Khan. Wiese then sealed the deal with the ball, dismissing Khushi off his third delivery while only conceding 10 runs in the over. Namibia’s 21 is also the highest score in a T20 World Cup Super Over.

The tie was only the fourth in T20 World Cup history and the third Super Over in the tournament.

While India and Pakistan played out the first tie in 2007, a bowl-out decided the winner. The first Super Over was played out in 2012 when Sri Lanka pipped New Zealand in Kandy. The Kiwis lost another Super Over in the same edition against West Indies.
